Local Associations

Local associations are your most immediate contact for getting professional support. Your local association comprises colleagues from your immediate geographic region and deals with your district administration.  Local associations advocate for their members and public education by respectively shaping and supporting the goals of AEA. Locals advance the educational and civic interests of the community, raise the standard of the education profession, cultivate a spirit of cooperation and unity among its members, and promote the mutual professional and material interests of members. In doing so they each form a representative body to speak with authority and create in the community at large a deeper sense of worth of the education profession and of the importance of the interests which it represents.

Any group of education employees employed by a city, county, or state board of education, or college board of trustees, may form a local association. For more information on local associations, sign-in to the AEA Member Section and review the current AEA Constitution.

Association Representatives

The Association Representative (AR) is the vital link in the education profession. Ideally, the AR is elected at the building/work site level by members that he/she will represent at governance meetings of the association.

In some locals, the AR is not a part of the governance structure but serves primarily as a communicator between the work site members and the association’s leadership.

The AR is:

a communicator between the work site members and the association governance bodies;
a listener and a sounding board for the association;
a motivator who champions work site concerns;
a siren sounding the call for member action;
a pied piper unifying members around the association flag;
an itch - raising questions - stirring members - sometimes disturbing them, but always keeping them awake;
most of all, a friend who remembers that whatever is important to a member is also important to the association representative

Contact your Uniserv Director for more information on how to become an Association Representative.
